Heritage, Community & Recovery: Stronger Together

Every year on 24 September, South Africans celebrate Heritage Day — a day that reminds us of the cultures, traditions, families and communities that have shaped who we are.

This year, Heritage Day also falls during Recovery Month, creating an opportunity to think about another important part of our shared story: the power of community in recovery.

Connection Can Make a Difference

Substance use can create isolation. People struggling with substance use may withdraw from family, friends and their communities, while stigma can make asking for help even more difficult.

Recovery can create an opportunity to rebuild those connections.

A supportive family member, friend, counsellor or community can remind someone that they do not have to face every challenge alone. Our heritage is not only about where we come from. It is also about the values we choose to carry forward.

We can choose compassion over judgement. We can encourage conversations about substance use and mental wellbeing. We can support prevention and early intervention. And we can create communities where asking for help is seen as a positive step.

Stronger Communities Support Recovery

This Heritage Day, as we celebrate South Africa’s diversity, let us also celebrate the strength that comes from standing together. Every person deserves the opportunity to build a healthier future, and every community has a role to play in making recovery possible.

This Heritage Day, let’s celebrate the connections that make us stronger — and create communities where recovery has room to grow.

SANCA is here to provide support, education and services to individuals, families and communities affected by substance use.
