Overdose Can Happen to Anyone: Know the Signs. Save a Life.

Every year on 31 August, International Overdose Awareness Day reminds us of the lives lost to overdose, the families and communities affected, and the importance of preventing future deaths.

It also carries an important message: overdose can happen to anyone.

What Is an Overdose?

An overdose occurs when the body is overwhelmed by a substance or combination of substances.

Risk can increase when substances are mixed, when an unexpectedly strong or contaminated substance is used, or when someone's tolerance has decreased after a period of reduced or no use.

Recognising that something is wrong and responding quickly can save a life.

Know the Warning Signs

Possible signs of an overdose can include:

  • Being unconscious or impossible to wake

  • Very slow, irregular or stopped breathing

  • Severe confusion or inability to respond

  • Vomiting

  • Seizures

  • Changes in skin, lip or fingertip colour

Different substances can cause different symptoms, so if you suspect an overdose, treat it as a medical emergency.

Contact emergency medical services immediately and stay with the person while waiting for help. Follow the emergency operator's instructions.

Every Overdose Has a Human Story

Behind overdose statistics are people — sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, partners, friends and colleagues.

Stigma can prevent people who use substances from reaching out for support. Compassion, education and access to appropriate treatment can help change that.

This International Overdose Awareness Day, SANCA encourages South Africans to learn the signs, act quickly, challenge stigma and remember those whose lives have been lost.

Know the signs. Act quickly. Every life matters.
