Behind the Strength: Women, Stress and Substance Use

Women are often expected to be strong — to care for families, manage responsibilities, support others and simply keep going.

But behind that strength, there may be struggles that aren't always visible.

This Women’s Month, SANCA encourages us to look beyond appearances and recognise that strong women need support too.

When Coping Becomes a Concern

Stress, trauma, relationship difficulties, financial pressure, caregiving responsibilities and other challenges can take a significant emotional toll.

For some women, alcohol or other substances may gradually become a way of coping. What begins occasionally can develop into harmful patterns that affect physical and emotional wellbeing, relationships, work and family life.

Substance use problems don't always look the way we expect them to. A woman may continue working, caring for her children and meeting her responsibilities while struggling privately.

Stigma Can Make Asking for Help Harder

Fear of judgement can prevent women from speaking openly about substance use. They may worry about how they will be viewed as a mother, partner, professional or member of their community. This can lead to problems remaining hidden and support being delayed.

Changing the conversation matters.

Substance use disorders require understanding, appropriate intervention and support — not shame.

Support Can Be the Beginning of Change

Asking for help doesn't erase a woman's strength. It can be one of the most important steps towards recovery.

SANCA provides professional substance-use prevention, treatment and support services for individuals, families and communities. This Women’s Month, make space for the women who may be carrying more than we can see.

Strong women need support too. Help is available.
